from Sappho
you burn edge beautiful lightening gifted
my was body lithe’s a grand oak failing
my heart carries heavy remember my knees carry nothing
now I sting & slope but what’s to do
even this sunbright summer dawn itself will die
& this bright creation slopes cold Martin West’s literal translation of the recently rediscovered Sappho poem was published in the Times Literary Supplement in 2005. |
